The story
The SA-9500 was one of Pioneer’s top integrated amplifiers of the mid-1970s, from the same period as the SX-x50 receivers. It is rated at 80 watts per channel into 8 Ω, 20 Hz–20 kHz, at 0.1% THD (about 110 W into 4 Ω), and at about 38 lb it is heavy for its power rating. The controls are flexible: bass and treble each have three switchable turnover frequencies, a tone on/off switch gives a flat signal path, and there are two-step high and low filters, tape duplicating, two speaker systems and a level control for the second phono input. Rear-panel pre-out/main-in connections let you run the preamp and power amp sections separately. The SA-9500 II followed around 1977 at the same 80 W rating but with a lower 0.05% THD specification. Either version suits a listener who already owns a tuner and wants a heavily built mid-70s Pioneer amplifier.

The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 6 checks
- 01Confirm whether the unit is an original SA-9500 or an SA-9500 II from the rear-panel label, since sellers mix them up.
- 02Check the pre-out/main-in jumpers are fitted, because the amp is silent without them.
- 03Confirm the protection relay engages and both channels play at equal volume with no hum or crackle.
- 04Work the turnover, filter and tape switches and listen for dropouts.
- 05Ask whether bias and DC offset have been checked and whether any capacitors have been replaced.
- 06At 38 lb it needs a double box with the transformer side well supported.

Which one to buy
eBay returns 369 results for the SA-9500, 65 for parts, and it mixes the original SA-9500 with the later SA-9500 II; the II units were filtered out here, but check the rear-panel label on anything you buy. Complete originals in this snapshot mostly ask $1,000–1,375 delivered. Prioritise a stated test or service, confirm the pre-out/main-in jumpers are fitted, and ask how a 38 lb amplifier will be double boxed. Red flags: a '(READ DESCRIPTION)' title that usually means a disclosed fault, and a $2,025 wood-cased unit carrying $285 shipping from a 97.7% seller. The $668 tested unit is the bargain; the fully serviced one at $1,370 is the low-risk buy.

Noisy volume and tone controls and crackly selector switches are the usual first job on a used SA-9500. Contact cleaner fixes most of it; bias and offset adjustments belong to the service manual or a technician.
