The story
The SA-7800 is part of Pioneer’s 1979 SA-x800 integrated amplifier line, which collectors call the “Blue Line” because of its blue fluorescent power-level meters. The range ran from the SA-5800 up to the SA-9800. It does not match the SX-780 receiver. It is a later, separate design. Pioneer rated it at 65 watts per channel into 8 Ω with a very low 0.009% THD, and it uses Pioneer’s Non-Switching Amplifier (NSA) circuit, which keeps the output transistors from switching fully off and so avoids crossover-type switching distortion. Features include tone controls with a bypass, loudness, a subsonic filter, a phono stage and tape monitoring. At about 28 lb it is solidly built for its power class. Original list was around $450. It suits someone who already has a tuner or streamer and wants a late-1970s Pioneer amplifier with a distinctive meter display.
Before you buy
The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 6 checks
- 01Ask for a powered-on photo of the fluorescent meters, since dim, uneven or partly dead segments are hard to repair and lower the value.
- 02Confirm the protection relay clicks in and both channels play at equal volume.
- 03Listen for crackle on the volume, balance and tone controls and on the input selector.
- 04Test the phono input with a turntable if you plan to use it.
- 05Ask whether the amplifier has been recapped or had its bias and DC offset checked.
- 06Make sure the seller ships it double boxed with the knobs protected.

Which one to buy
eBay returns 425 results for the SA-7800, 94 for parts, and two different amplifiers share the name: the 1979 'Blue Line' model described on this page, with blue fluorescent power meters, and an earlier SA-7800 with analog needle meters. None of the titles below say which one they are, so check the meters in the photos before you buy. Complete units mostly ask $625–850 delivered, though that band rests on only four fixed prices. Prioritise a seller who says it works or has been serviced; red flags include $180 shipping on the cheapest unit, a 'working' unit missing a knob, and a Japan-sourced parts unit that is likely a 100V domestic model. The serviced unit at about $881 is the safest buy.

Our take
A Japan-sourced parts unit, likely 100V, at $445 shipped; dearer than the other parts unit, so skip unless you need its parts.

Noisy volume and tone controls and crackly selector switches are the usual first job on a used SA-7800. Contact cleaner fixes most of it; bias and offset adjustments belong to the service manual or a technician.
