Fisher, founded in New York in 1945 by Avery Fisher as Fisher Radio, is one of the founding names of American high fidelity. It is the only brand in this catalog represented by US-built models, and both of ours date from the years when Fisher still designed and built its receivers in New York. Emerson bought Fisher in 1969 and sold it to Sanyo in 1975, after which Fisher-branded products were increasingly made in Japan for the mass market. This catalog covers both sides of Fisher’s tube-to-transistor transition. The 500-C is the classic all-tube stereo receiver, with four 7591 output tubes and a multiplex FM tuner, built in numbers Stereophile estimated at over 100,000. The 800-T is a later solid-state AM/FM receiver from around 1968 to 1972, notable for AutoScan and Tune-O-Matic preset tuning. Restoration realities differ between the two. A 500-C needs capacitor work, a rectifier check and properly biased output tubes before regular use. An 800-T depends on early transistors that can fail and be difficult to replace. Budget for a qualified technician with either one.
