The story
The KR-6600 sits just below the KR-7600 in Kenwood’s 1976 KR-x600 receiver line. Its published power rating varies by source. The most commonly quoted figure is 56 watts per channel into 8 Ω, 20 Hz–20 kHz, at 0.3% THD, while other references list 60 W at 0.3%, and Kenwood’s spring 1976 launch announcement gave 65 W at 0.1%. Either way it is a mid-power receiver, and at about 36 lb it is well built for its class. Original list was around $450. It has the same layout and many of the same features as the 7600: signal-strength and tuning meters, two phono inputs, two tape decks with dubbing, a microphone input with Sound Inject mixing, Acoustic boost switches at 50 Hz and 800 Hz, bass and treble controls, high and low filters, loudness, and outputs for three pairs of speakers. It suits someone who wants the 1976 Kenwood look and a well-regarded tuner but doesn’t need the KR-7600’s extra power.
Before you buy
The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 6 checks
- 01Ask for a powered-on photo showing the dial and both meters lit, since dead incandescent lamps are common.
- 02Confirm the protection relay clicks in and both channels play at equal volume without hum or crackle.
- 03Listen for scratchy pots and intermittent tape, speaker and Acoustic switches.
- 04Tune across the FM band and check the pointer moves smoothly and the tuning meter centers on stations.
- 05Ask whether any service has been done, and treat untested listings as repair projects.
- 06Make sure it is double boxed, because the faceplate and knobs are easily damaged in transit.

Which one to buy
119 KR-6600s are listed, 22 for parts, with complete ones mostly asking $480–750 delivered. Tested units start near $480 delivered and serviced ones run about $684–798, so price an untested receiver as a repair project. Ask for a powered-on photo of the dial and both meters, since dead lamps are common. Red flags: $200 shipping on one $500 unit and $169 on another, so check shipping before you offer. The $482 tested one is the safe value buy; the cheapest is for someone happy to gamble on an untested unit.

Most KR-6600s need their controls and switches cleaned, and many need dial or meter lamps. Contact cleaner is the first thing to buy; leave internal adjustments and recapping to the service manual or a technician.
