The story
The KR-7600 was the top model when Kenwood launched its KR-x600 receivers in April 1976. Once the KR-9600 arrived later that year it became the second model in the line. Kenwood’s published rating is 80 watts per channel into 8 Ω, 20 Hz–20 kHz, at 0.3% THD (0.05% at 1 watt), and the suggested retail price was $529.95. It weighs about 38 lb. Radio-Electronics tested it in April 1977 and noted the clean, squared-off front panel with the traditional black-out dial. The tuner section is well specified for its day, with 1.7 µV usable FM sensitivity. On the amplifier side you get a 2.5 mV phono input, a 1.5 mV microphone input for mixing, “Acoustic” presence switches that add 3 or 6 dB at 50 Hz and 800 Hz, low- and high-cut filters, and pre-out/main-in connections. It suits someone who wants solid mid-power performance and a good FM tuner in a classic silver-faced receiver.

The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 6 checks
- 01Ask for a powered-on photo of the dial and meters with all lamps working.
- 02Confirm the protection relay engages and both channels play evenly at moderate volume.
- 03Check that the pre-out/main-in jumpers are fitted, since a missing jumper means no sound from the speakers.
- 04Listen for scratchy volume, balance and tone controls and test the Acoustic and filter switches.
- 05Tune across the FM band and confirm the pointer tracks smoothly and stations lock in cleanly.
- 06Ask whether the receiver has been recapped or had its bias and DC offset checked.

Which one to buy
82 KR-7600s are listed, only one for parts, but this snapshot holds just four complete ones, so the $575–850 band rests on three fixed prices. The one listing that says bench checked and serviced is $750 with free shipping, the middle of that band, and is the easy buy. 'Powers on' in a title is not a test, so price the cheapest unit as unserviced. Wood cases add a lot here: a custom hardwood one takes a unit to about $913, and a 'rare wood case' unit asks $1,099 before shipping. Ask for powered-on photos of the dial and meters, and confirm the pre-out/main-in jumpers are fitted.

Most KR-7600s need their controls and switches cleaned, and many need dial or meter lamps. Contact cleaner is the first thing to buy; leave internal adjustments and recapping to the service manual or a technician.
