MarantzModel 2245 · Receiver
The story
The 2245 is the 45 W per channel model of Marantz’s early-1970s receiver range, sitting between the 2230 and the 2270 and made from about 1971 to 1976 at a launch price of around $450. It shares the family layout: brushed-aluminum faceplate, blue-lit dial, Gyro-Touch flywheel tuning, signal-strength and center-tuning meters, bass, mid and treble controls, high and low filters, loudness, muting and pre-out/main-in jacks. Rated at 45 W per channel into 8 Ω at 0.3% THD, it has noticeably more headroom than the 2230 for less efficient bookshelf speakers. It sold in large numbers, so examples turn up regularly, and its straightforward internal layout makes it a reasonable restoration candidate. The optional WC-22 walnut case is the same one used by the 2230 and 2270. It suits a buyer who wants the classic early-1970s Marantz look with more power than the 2230, without the size and cost of a 2270.

The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 6 checks
- 01Look closely at the dial color in photos, because the blue dial backing often yellows toward green with age and is a cosmetic issue to price in.
- 02Ask whether all dial and meter lamps light.
- 03Listen for crackle or dropouts when moving the selector, tone controls and switches, and expect a contact-cleaning session at minimum.
- 04Ask whether the power-supply filter capacitors have been replaced and whether bias was set after any amplifier work.
- 05Check that the pre-out/main-in jumpers are in place on the rear panel.
- 06If the receiver comes in a WC-22 case, ask whether it has been running hot, since the case restricts ventilation.

Which one to buy
170 Marantz 2245s are listed, 13 for parts, and most complete ones ask $1,050–1,225 delivered. None of the captured listings says serviced or recapped, so even a 'works' unit should be expected to need at least a contact clean, and its 50-year-old filter capacitors may be original. Prioritise a seller who states it works and shows the dial and both meters lit; check the dial color too, since the blue backing yellows toward green with age. Red flags: $160–200 shipping on several units, a $1,163 receiver whose phono stage needs service, and a zero-feedback seller offering one in a wood case with no shipping stated. The $1,000 free-shipping unit listed as working is the sensible buy.

No 2245 in this snapshot is listed as serviced, so a seller's 'works' claim is the best evidence on offer, here at $1,000 shipped. Plan on cleaning the controls and switches, and ask for a video of it playing through both channels.

Most 2245s need their controls and switches cleaned, and many need dial or meter lamps. Contact cleaner is the first thing to buy; leave internal adjustments and recapping to the service manual or a technician.
