The story
The 800-T is a solid-state AM/FM stereo receiver, not a tube or hybrid design. It belongs to Fisher’s first generation of transistor receivers, made in the United States from around 1968 to 1972, and it is closely related to the Fisher 500-TX. Its party piece is the tuning section: you can tune with the conventional knob, with AutoScan touch tuning that seeks the next station, or with Tune-O-Matic, which stores four FM stations on pushbuttons. An optional wired remote (RK-30) was offered. Fisher promoted the FM front end’s dual-gate MOSFETs and crystal IF filter for sensitivity and selectivity, and the dial includes a signal-strength meter. Fisher quoted 190 watts of IHF music power. It suits buyers who like late-60s American gear and its gadget-heavy tuning, and who have access to a technician comfortable with early transistor circuits, since some of the original transistors are fragile and hard to source.
Before you buy
The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 6 checks
- 01Ask whether any output or driver transistors have been replaced and with what, since early transistors in this receiver are known to fail and can be hard to source.
- 02Listen to both channels at moderate volume for distortion in one channel, a classic sign of a failing transistor.
- 03Test the AutoScan and Tune-O-Matic preset functions as well as manual tuning, because the extra tuning circuitry adds things to go wrong.
- 04Confirm the signal-strength meter moves and that dial lamps light.
- 05Rotate controls and press switches while listening for crackle.
- 06Check that the cabinet or faceplate is not cracked and that all knobs are present.

Which one to buy
115 Fisher 800-Ts are listed, and 26 of them, nearly a quarter, are for parts or repair. Complete ones mostly ask $1,550–1,800 delivered. This is an early solid-state receiver whose original transistors are fragile and hard to source, so a unit serviced by someone who has dealt with them is worth paying for, and you should ask about the AutoScan and Tune-O-Matic presets as well as manual tuning. Red flags: the cheapest listing also names the 500-TX in its title, and an all-original unit asks about $2,774, over $1,000 more than the serviced one.

Most 800-Ts need their controls and switches cleaned, and many need dial or meter lamps. Contact cleaner is the first thing to buy; leave internal adjustments and recapping to the service manual or a technician.
