Marantz 22xx stereo receivers · c. 1972–1975

The 2230 is the 30 W per channel model in Marantz’s early-1970s receiver line, introduced around 1972 at a list price of $349.95, and one of the most discussed vintage receivers on collector forums. It has the full feature set of the bigger 2245 and 2270: Gyro-Touch flywheel tuning, signal-strength and center-tuning meters, three-band bass, mid and treble controls, high and low filters, pre-out/main-in jacks and a well-regarded moving-magnet phono stage. The power amplifier is capacitor-coupled to the speakers and runs from a single-rail supply, which many owners credit for its warm character. The later 2230B is a substantially different design, with a direct-coupled output stage, a bipolar supply and an IC-based FM section, so buyers who want the original circuit should confirm which version is for sale. The walnut WC-22 case was sold separately and is often missing. Thirty watts per channel drives typical bookshelf and efficient floorstanding speakers well in an average room.
183 Marantz 2230s are listed, ten for parts, with complete ones mostly asking $800–1,400 delivered. Check the faceplate and rear panel: the 2230B is a different circuit, and the cheapest listing in this search is a 2230B that needs service. Pay for a recent, documented service with the supply and output capacitors replaced, and if a wood case is included, confirm it's a Marantz WC-22. Red flags: a generic title copied across two sellers, one of them at 80% feedback, and 'Japan' in one title, which most likely means where it was built but is worth confirming as a 120V unit. The tested $607 one is the budget buy; the one serviced in August 2026 at $1,100 shipped is the one to use straight away.

Tested and working per the title, about $607 delivered, Buy It Now, from a 100% seller, about $190 under the band and the lowest-priced true 2230 here. Ask for a powered-on photo of both meters and whether the capacitors have been replaced.

A 2230B, a different circuit from the 2230, and the title says it needs service; $500 shipped is fair only on that basis.
