TechnicsModel RS-1500U · Tape deck
The story
The RS-1500 is an open-reel deck, not a cassette deck: a three-motor, three-speed machine (15, 7½ and 3¾ ips) that takes reels up to 10½ inches. Its signature is Technics’ “Isolated Loop” tape path. A single 34 mm direct-drive capstan with two pinch rollers forms a closed loop around the heads, isolating them from the reels and running at about 80 grams of tape tension, roughly half that of a conventional path. The capstan motor is quartz-controlled and phase-locked, and both reel motors are brushless direct-drive units with electronic tension control. Technics rated wow and flutter at 0.018% WRMS at 15 ips. The RS-1500 records and plays half-track stereo and also plays quarter-track tapes, with a ±6% pitch control, three-position bias and EQ switches, mic/line mixing and a real-time counter. It is a serious machine for buyers who want to play or make half-track tapes, and it rewards owners willing to keep a complex transport in calibration.

Before you buy
The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 6 checks
- 01Ask the seller to demonstrate play, fast-forward, rewind and stop with a full 10½-inch reel, and watch that the brakes stop the reels without spilling or stretching tape.
- 02Check that the pinch rollers are not hardened, cracked or glazed.
- 03Inspect the heads under good light for flat spots or wear grooves, and ask whether head wear or alignment has been measured.
- 04Confirm the 2-track/4-track playback head selector works and that both level meters respond in record and playback.
- 05Listen for crackle when operating switches and controls.
- 06Insist on double-boxed packing with the head block protected, because a 55-pound deck is easily damaged in transit.

Which one to buy
211 results come up for the RS-1500, many of them parts, and complete decks mostly ask $2,025–2,875 delivered. Many of the decks here are sold from Japan (by title or seller name) and at least one is marked AC100V, so confirm the voltage and budget for a step-up transformer if needed. Prioritise a deck whose transport, brakes and heads have been checked: the only serviced and calibrated deck asks about $4,195, while the 'tested' decks from Japan cost about half that, so ask exactly what was tested. Red flags: one title and photo shared by two sellers, a deck with a stated speed issue and another that 'needs service' at band prices, and $1,250 shipping that pushes one deck past $6,500.
