The story
The SL-1200MK2 arrived in 1979 as an update of the 1972 SL-1200 and became the version most people mean when they say “a 1200.” It is a manual direct-drive turntable with a quartz-locked brushless DC motor (1.5 kg·cm starting torque per Technics), a 2 kg diecast platter, a ±8% pitch slider, a strobe illuminator built into the power switch, and a gimbal-suspended S-shaped tonearm with height adjustment. Technics quoted wow and flutter at 0.01% WRMS for the rotating parts alone (0.025% WRMS by the JIS method). Its torque, speed stability and tolerance for abuse made it the standard club DJ deck, while the same qualities make it a durable, low-maintenance hi-fi turntable. The design stayed in production in successive versions (MK3, M3D, MK5) until Panasonic discontinued Technics analog turntables in November 2010, with more than three million SL-1200-series decks sold. Because so many were built, condition varies widely: many have spent years in clubs and mobile DJ rigs.

The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 6 checks
- 01Ask whether the deck was used for club or mobile DJ work, and look for worn platter edges, scratched plinths and missing feet.
- 02Move the pitch slider through its full range and confirm the speed changes smoothly without jumps, and that the strobe dots stand still at 0% with quartz lock engaged.
- 03Check the tonearm for play in the bearings by gently rocking it at the headshell collar.
- 04Confirm the arm-height ring turns and locks and that the anti-skate and counterweight are present.
- 05Inspect the attached phono and ground leads for damage near the chassis.
- 06Check that the strobe lamp and stylus light work and that the dust cover and hinges are intact.

Which one to buy
272 results come up for the SL-1200MK2, and complete single decks mostly ask $800–1,250 delivered, with tested ones available below that. Supply is deep, so be choosy: prefer a seller who has checked the pitch slider through its range, the strobe at 0% and the tonearm bearings, and ask whether the deck has club or mobile DJ history. Decks sold from Japan may be 100V models, so confirm the voltage. Red flags: zero-feedback sellers reusing the same plain title, custom-painted decks at about $1,180–2,060 delivered, and a 'wood and gold' deck at about $2,954; pairs and DJ bundles are left out of these prices.

Budget for a new stylus or cartridge with any used SL-1200MK2: a worn stylus damages records. A stylus gauge and a protractor make setup easy.
