The story
The 5000A was Sansui’s top AM/FM stereo receiver when it appeared in 1969, and it stayed in the catalogue until about 1971, when the 5000X replaced it. It is a solid-state design rated at 55 W per channel continuous into 8 Ω, a high figure for a receiver of that time, and it retailed for roughly $400 in the US. The feature list reflects its flagship role: three sets of speaker outputs, two tape monitor loops plus a tape-head input, separate left and right bass and treble controls, signal-strength and tuning meters, FM muting, and a wooden cabinet. The model history matters to buyers. The 5000A originally used F-1040 driver boards whose bias diodes can fail and let the idle current run away, taking out the output transistors; Sansui later replaced it with the revised F-6013 board, which most 5000X receivers carry. It suits someone who wants a late-1960s receiver with real power and is prepared to have it properly serviced before regular use.
