The story
The SX-650 is the middle of Pioneer’s SX-x50 receiver range, the line that ran from the SX-450 up to the SX-1250 in the mid-1970s. It is rated at 35 watts per channel into 8 Ω across the full 20 Hz–20 kHz band at 0.3% THD, which is enough for reasonably efficient bookshelf or floor speakers in an ordinary room. You get the classic x50 look: a brushed silver faceplate, a long illuminated FM/AM dial, and separate signal-strength and tuning meters. Practical features include two tape loops, a phono input, a high filter, FM muting and click-stop bass and treble controls. It weighs about 29 lb, which is heavy for its power rating and reflects the solid build of this generation. The SX-650 is a sensible first vintage receiver for a turntable-and-bookshelf-speaker setup. Buy it for the look and the build quality. If you need real power for hard-to-drive speakers, look higher in the range.
