The story
The 2215B is the smallest receiver in this catalog and one of the most common ways into 1970s Marantz. It is rated at 15 W per channel into 8 Ω, which suits efficient speakers in a small room or a desk system better than it suits power-hungry acoustic-suspension designs. Despite the modest output it carries the family look: brushed-aluminum faceplate, blue-lit dial and Marantz’s Gyro-Touch tuning wheel. The FM section uses an FET front end, ceramic IF filters and a phase-locked-loop multiplex decoder, and the amplifier side offers bass and treble controls, loudness, a mono switch, a headphone jack and two speaker pairs. It is not simply a cosmetic refresh of the 2215: the earlier 2215 is a different receiver that shares little beyond the 15 W rating, so check which one a listing actually describes. The 2215B suits a first vintage receiver, a bedroom or office system, or anyone who wants the 1970s Marantz look on a modest budget and with modest speakers.

Before you buy
The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 6 checks
- 01Ask whether the dial and pointer lamps all light, since a dark dial usually means burnt-out incandescent bulbs rather than a deeper fault.
- 02Work the push buttons and the volume, balance and tone controls while music plays, listening for crackle or a channel dropping out.
- 03Ask whether the power-supply filter capacitor and other electrolytics have been replaced, as they are now roughly 50 years old.
- 04Confirm that FM tunes cleanly and the stereo indicator lights on a strong station, not just that the dial glows.
- 05Ask whether bias was set after any amplifier repair, and look in photos for messy rework around the output transistors.
- 06Make sure the faceplate says 2215B rather than 2215, because the two are different receivers.

Which one to buy
75 Marantz 2215Bs are listed, four for parts, with complete ones mostly asking $550–800 delivered. Serviced units are cheap right now: one with new LEDs is $500 shipped, so there's little reason to buy an untested one. Check the faceplate says 2215B, not the earlier 2215, and ask whether all the dial lamps light, since dead bulbs are the usual complaint. Red flags: an untested as-is unit at $450 whose title is copied across two sellers, and a 'works, please read description' listing that keeps its catch in the text. A full recap costs about $965 here; take it only if you want all the work done.

Most 2215Bs need their controls and switches cleaned, and many need dial or meter lamps. Contact cleaner is the first thing to buy; leave internal adjustments and recapping to the service manual or a technician.
