The story
The G-9000 is one of the largest of Sansui’s late-1970s G-series receivers, introduced around 1978 with direct-coupled power stages. Sansui rated it at 160 W per channel into 8 Ω at 0.03% THD; it measures 560 mm wide and weighs about 59 lb. It has four large meters for signal, tuning and left and right power, bass, midrange and treble tone controls, a subsonic filter, wide and narrow IF bandwidth on FM, inputs for two turntables and a microphone, and tape dubbing in both directions between two decks. A G-9000DB version added a Dolby FM decoder; with Dolby FM broadcasting long gone, the two are functionally the same today. Sansui built the even larger G-22000 and G-33000 above it, but the G-9000 turns up far more often. For buyers who want a very powerful all-in-one receiver from the late-1970s power race, it is a realistic route to a top-tier Sansui, but its size and the cost of a proper service should be part of the decision.

Before you buy
The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 6 checks
- 01Ask for the DC offset at each speaker output and whether the bias has been set, and confirm the protection relay clicks in cleanly after warm-up.
- 02Check that all four meters work and that their lamps light.
- 03Work the volume, balance, three tone controls and selector for crackle or signal dropouts, which are common on these as the controls collect dirt.
- 04Ask whether the electrolytic capacitors have been replaced, since a unit that has sat unused for years is likely to need it.
- 05Tune across the FM band in both wide and narrow IF modes.
- 06At about 59 lb it is easy to damage in shipping, so insist on double boxing with the unit well supported and check photos for cracked cabinet corners.

Which one to buy
eBay shows 118 results for the G-9000, but nearly all are parts (meters, faceplates, trim rings, cabinets), and only one complete receiver was listed at capture, so the $4,000 'typical' figure is that single asking price, not a market read. It is listed as recapped and serviced, asks $4,000 with shipping not stated, and comes from a 97% seller. At about 59 lb, the delivered price and packing matter, so ask for a shipping quote and double boxing, the DC offset and bias after the recap, and whether all four meters and their lamps work. Check the full search for other complete units before treating $4,000 as the going rate.

Most G-9000s need their controls and switches cleaned, and many need dial or meter lamps. Contact cleaner is the first thing to buy; leave internal adjustments and recapping to the service manual or a technician.
