SansuiModel AU-217 · Integrated amp
The story
The AU-217 is the entry point to Sansui’s AU-x17 integrated amplifier range of the late 1970s, a black-faced line that ran up through the AU-517 and AU-717. Sansui rated it at 30 W per channel into 8 Ω from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 0.06% THD, and it weighs about 19 lb, so it is a genuinely compact, modest-power amplifier rather than a scaled-down 717. The feature set is still complete: a moving-magnet phono stage, bass and treble controls, subsonic and high filters, loudness, and tape play and copy switching for two decks. A later AU-217 II raised the rating to 40 W per channel, so check which version a listing is before comparing prices. It suits efficient bookshelf or floor-standing speakers in a small room, a second system, or a first vintage amplifier for someone who wants the AU-x17 look and a working phono input without the size and weight of the bigger models. Sansui sold the matching TU-217 tuner alongside it if you want the period stack.

Before you buy
The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 6 checks
- 01Ask whether the speaker protection relay clicks in a few seconds after power-on and whether both channels play cleanly on the A and B speaker outputs.
- 02Turn every knob and switch, or ask the seller to: crackle from the volume, balance or tone controls and dropouts on the selector are common after decades and usually clean up with contact cleaner.
- 03Confirm the phono input works with a turntable, not only the aux or tuner input.
- 04Ask for the DC offset at the speaker terminals and whether the idle current has been checked, since an amplifier of unknown history may never have had either adjusted.
- 05Check the rear-panel label to confirm whether it is an AU-217 or an AU-217 II.
- 06Look for an aftermarket power cord, extra holes or missing screws that suggest an earlier repair, and ask what was done.

Which one to buy
Only five complete AU-217s turned up in this search (two AU-217 II listings were left out, since the II is the later 40 W version), mostly asking $330–490 delivered. A professionally serviced, tested unit is the cheapest of them at about $315, so there is little reason to pay more for an unserviced one. Ask any seller whether the protection relay clicks in and both channels play on A and B, and check the rear label reads AU-217, not AU-217 II. Avoid the zero-feedback seller at about $490 and the $211 shipping charge on a $391 amp.

Noisy volume and tone controls and crackly selector switches are the usual first job on a used AU-217. Contact cleaner fixes most of it; bias and offset adjustments belong to the service manual or a technician.
